The World March for peace to carry the Abolition Flame around the world

16:01:00 8/5/09 Hiroshima, Japan
On August 5th in Hiroshima a ceremony will be held to light the Nuclear Abolition Flame which will be carried by the World March for Peace and Nonviolence.

The flame will be passed to New Zealand Mayor Robert Harvey to take to New Zealand for the start of the World March. It will then be carried around the world during the March highlighting the call for a treaty to prohibit nuclear weapons.

Abolition 2000 will then take the flame to New York for the 2010 NPT Review Conference. This is part of the Nuclear Abolition Flame campaign.

During the ceremony a Hibakusha - a survivor of the atomic bomb - will light the Nuclear Abolition torch from the Hiroshima Flame that was kindled from the ashes of Hiroshima after the bomb dropped and has burned ever since in the Hiroshima Peace Garden. The torch will be passed to Mayor Akiba's representative who will say a few words before passing it to a youth representative. Mayor Bob Harvey will then accept the torch on behalf of the World March.

The Ceremony will be led by Mayra Gomez from the organising committee of the March in New Zealand and a representative from World without Wars will also speak.

Media representatives will cover the event that will be witnessed by World March representatives and peace organisations from Japan and overseas.
