As the world prepares to undertake the most ambitious march ever attempted, Rafael de La Rubia, president of World Without Wars and spokesperson for the World March for Peace and Nonviolence is traveling throughout the globe to raise support, consciousness and awareness. De La Rubia arrived in New York on May 4th, 2009 for a one-week visit where he will be participating in the NPT PrepCom meeting at the UN (Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty).

The World March for Peace and Nonviolence is the first effort to unite the globe through an international nonviolent mobilization. The march calls for the eradication of nuclear weapons, the signing of non-aggression treaties amongst nations and the end of war as a means to resolve conflicts. The march has quickly gained support worldwide, as it has been endorsed by several Nobel peace prize winners, Presidents, and thousands of organizations.

Beginning in New Zealand, on October 2nd, 2009, the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, and the International Day of Non-Violence, an international team of marchers will be crossing the planet calling for an end to wars, nuclear arms and all forms of violence.

Simultaneously, the march will be accompanied by an unprecedented social mobilization in more than 100 countries, on the 7 continents where marches, festivals, exhibits, concerts, forums, conferences and social, cultural, educational and athletic events will be taking place. The march will conclude in the Andes Mountains, in Punta de Vacas, Argentina, on January 2, 2010. In his recent visit through Latin America, Mr. de la Rubia met with numerous organizations, and government officials who have endorsed the march such as Bogota Mayor Samuel Moreno and Chile’s president Michelle Bachelet. Bachelet in a video testimony states, “It pleases me enormously to support this fantastic idea of diverse organizations around the world to ask for an end to war. Wanting is not enough; we must work united for this cause, because we have learned the lesson that history has taught us.”

De La Rubia will be addressing United Nation delegates, social, cultural and humanitarian experts as well as stakeholders, NGOs and media outlets at the United Nations on Wednesday, May 6th, 2009, Conference Room 9 from 1:15 pm- 2:30pm. His talk will focus on the role of the United Nations in the World March as well as developments of the World March in the Americas.
